News from Room 212

Parents, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather!  If we have outside recess students need to have a coat, hat, and gloves.  Also, make sure that students are arriving at school no earlier than 8:30, if they are having breakfast.  We want all the kids to be safe and prior to 8:30 there is no adult supervision.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 973-9800 or email me at jwagner@usd259.net

Planners:
We received planners last week.
The planners will be used to write in daily. The students will write their daily assignments in them and any homework they may have for that night. We will use them to document daily what color card each student is on.
This is a great communication piece between school and home. Teachers will be able to write notes home and parents can write notes to teachers.
I will check the planners every day before the child goes home and initial it before they leave. I ask that parents look at it every night and initial it before the student comes to school the next day. This will ensure that parents and teachers are making sure the students are doing what they need to be doing. If the planner is signed the students will receive a sticker. Five stickers in a row and the child will receive a special prize.
Planners are used in fourth and fifth grade also, so this is a way to get them ready for the next grade. Please make sure you are signing their planners every night.
If you need to get a hold of me please call 973-9800 or email me at jwagner@usd259.net.

Thanks to all who came to open house. We had a great time. Sign up sheets were out for fall conferences. If you were able to sign up than that is the time you will be given. If you were not able to sign up than a time will be given to you for conferences.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new year in third grade!!  We are off to a great start!  We are getting to know each other, learning routines, and practicing proper third grade behavior.  Conduct card procedures will be the same as last year.  We will also continue to use the “colored card” system in our classroom.  The color reflects the type of day your child had at school.

Our current schedule for specials is as follows:
Monday:           Art and Music
Tuesday:           PE and Music
Thursday:          Library
Friday:              P.E.

In order to fully participate in all P.E. activities, students will need to wear or bring tennis shoes for those days.

Breakfast is served at 8:30 each morning.  If your child will not be eating breakfast and they do not go to latchkey, make sure they are dropped off no earlier than 8:40.  If your student needs to meet a sibling after school, they will need to have a designated meeting place outside of the building since each grade exits the building through specific doors.

Students will eat lunch from 12:40-1:00 each day, followed by recess from 1:00-1:20.  If you would like to take your child out for lunch, bring a special lunch, or eat with your child, please remember to check in at the office.  See the following sheet for information regarding daily snacks.

Third grade classes will not be taking a formal spelling test.  Each week we will focus on a specific group of words during our reading block.  These will be words we are concentrating on in our writing, words from our story, vocabulary words, and target words from our Word Wall.

Homework will be sent on an as needed basis.  This will include additional practice on a particular skill we have been learning in class and assignments not completed during class time.  Any homework sent home will need to be completed and returned the following school day.  Finally, your child should be reading at least 15 minutes each night.  This can include silent reading, reading to a sibling, parent or other adult, or listening as someone else reads aloud.

Birthdays are a special time for celebration!!  Simple treats may be sent to school (or brought by you) on your child’s birthday. Treats are optional and certainly not expected.  If you choose to send treats, please refrain from anything with nuts, due to possible allergies, and red dye, such as kool-aid and other red drinks as this will stain our carpet.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Open House and Ice Cream Social on August 21st  from 5:30-7:00.  I look forward to seeing you there!

You can visit our web page at http://beech.usd259.org/Wagner.html. I will have news letters, pictures, and helpful websites posted there. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 973-9800 or email  jwagner@usd259.net.  Thank you for helping making this a great year.

To:  Third Grade Parents
From:  Third Grade Teachers

As the year of 2008-2009 begins we want to let you know that third graders will not eat lunch until 12:40. We realize that it is a long time to go from breakfast to lunch. We are letting the students bring a healthy snack each day to eat around 10:15. Examples of a healthy snack would be crackers, granola bars, and various fruits. We ask that children do not bring oranges or peaches (they tend to be very messy). Also, chips and candy are not considered healthy snacks.

Students are also allowed to bring a water bottle to use throughout the day. The best kind to bring are ones with a pop up lid. The screw on lids can present problems when not put back on right. If the water does become a problem it will be taken away.

We hope this will help with the late lunch.
