Welcome!

Dear Parents,

My name is Lauren Green and I will be your child’s teacher this year.  I look forward to having your child in my classroom during the 2008-2009 school year at Beech Elementary.  We are going to have a very fun and productive school year together and I hope that your child is looking forward to it!  You can contact me via email at anytime or call the school (feel free to leave a message if I am unavailable to answer).  You are welcome, and encouraged to stop by to visit, read to the students, volunteer in the classroom, or eat lunch with your student.  However, for safety reasons, you must sign in at the office, and please contact me to let me know of your plans to do so.  A schedule will be sent home with your child; please you this to gain knowledge of the best and most appropriate times to visit the school.

Keeping You “In the Know”

Once a week, usually on Fridays, I will be sending home a “4th Grade Update” note in order to let you know what we will be working on the following week.  Please read over it each week, as it will inform you of what your student will be learning in class, what tests are approaching, and additional information I may feel is important.  Notes will come home in a Friday Folder with completed and graded assignments.  Please look through this folder weekly and return the following Monday.

Discipline

I believe that good behavior in school and cooperating with others are essential elements to maintaining a positive learning community.  Therefore, I have a discipline plan that encourages this.  The students will receive “Bobcat Bucks” at the beginning of each week.  Throughout the week, they will have the opportunity to keep those bucks or lose them depending on their behavior.  Every two to three weeks, depending on scheduling, we will hold a “store” time in which students can spend their money.  Quarterly, we will hold a “market” in which students can bring their own objects to sell to the class and earn additional money (please help make sure their objects are appropriate).  As a class, students can earn additional Bobcat Bucks for good behavior, class participation, respectfulness, etc.
The school-wide discipline plan in place will also encourage the students to be on their best behavior.  As a class, students will receive Paws for complements and good behavior.  Once twenty Paws are earned, a party will be held to celebrate.
I feel that the above plan will help keep a positive spin on behavior; however, misbehavior that may still occur will be handled on an individual basis.
Homework

Students are required to keep a planner and to write down all assignments daily.  This is the responsibility of the student.  If students are absent, the student is responsible recording the assignments the following day.  Homework will be sent home when students do not complete inc class work, in preparation for tests, or when I feel necessary.  Please check your student’s planner and encourage hard work.
Their planners will come home nightly and may contain notes from me to you.  Please sign the planner so that I can see your student is sharing his/her day with you.
I give credit/grades for homework that is turned in on the day it should be.  The students will earn consequences if the homework is not turned in (i.e. deduction in Bobcat Bucks, missing recess to complete, sent home again to complete, deduction in grade, etc.).

Birthdays

Your child may bring in treats on his/her Birthday if you choose to send some.  However, please write me a note, email or call me so that I can set aside time for the celebration.  If your child does not celebrate Birthdays of other holidays, please let me know so that I can respect your beliefs.

Expectations

I expect that this year will be fun and educational for your student.  I am excited to get to know your child on an individual basis and watch them grow over the school year.  I expect your student to be prepared for class daily by having homework completed, materials ready, and a positive attitude towards the day.  My goal is to make students feel welcomed, safe, comfortable, and to understand that they are cared for.  Students are expected to always try their best, and to let me know of their concerns.

I look forward to a wonderful year!

Sincerely,
Lauren Green
